PeakX Routes
Discover, download and follow millions of GPS routes — and share your own track.
Overview
PeakX Routes is a platform that brings route discovery, offline navigation and community sharing together for hiking, cycling, running, skiing and more than thirty other outdoor activities. We built every layer: the mobile app, the website, the admin panel and the routing engine.
The challenge
The hardest part of an outdoor app is that the user is alone where there is no connection. Route data is large, map tiles are heavy and location tracking drains the battery. On top of that, route quality depends on community contributions: an unverified track means taking the wrong turn on a mountain.
The solution
We designed the app offline-first: responses are written to a local cache, user-generated records go into a sync queue and are sent in order once the connection returns. For route calculation we run our own Valhalla server, which lets us produce routes with per-activity cost models and no dependency on a third-party service. Route data is imported from OpenStreetMap and the ODbL attribution is preserved in the interface.
Results
- iOS and Android released from a single codebase
- Offline maps, GPX download and off-route warnings
- A separate routing cost model for 36 activity types
- Membership flow with card and in-app payments
- Content, user and route-source management from the admin panel
