Offline-First Mobile Architecture
An app layer that works without a connection and recovers itself once one returns.
Overview
In an app that has to work on a mountain, at sea and in a tunnel, 'no connection' cannot be an error screen. We designed a layer that prepares the read and the write paths for offline use separately.
The challenge
Adding offline support screen by screen produces an app that behaves differently everywhere and cannot be tested. And once a user loses a change they made offline, you never win back their trust in the product.
The solution
We put the solution in the API layer, not in the screens. There is a response cache on the read side and a durable sync queue on the write side; the queue handles retries, ordering and conflict resolution in one place. The screens became offline-capable without knowing anything about it.
Results
- One layer, offline behaviour across every screen
- User records that survive even if the app is closed
- Exponential backoff for retries
- Disconnected scenarios verified by screen tests
